Breast surgery is a very large part of my Plastic Surgery practice. Excellent surgery of the breast begins with an understanding of what a beautiful breast looks like. While surgery and techniques can be taught to anyone during their surgical training, I am not sure that the concept of a pretty looking breast can. It has been my experience that different women have very different ideas of what they would like their breasts to look like after surgery. My number one goal is to understand your preferences in terms of size, incision placement, and overall look of the breast including upper pole fullness, cleavage and nipple position. Once I understand my patient’s ideal breast, we can discuss the possibilities of what can be done and how to achieve our goals.
Currently, I am very excited to offer Natrelle® Breast Implants to my patients. These breast implant devices have only recently become available to Plastic Surgeons in the United States and my experience with them has been extraordinary. The variety of gel types and shapes has given my practice a real boost in what I am able to offer patients. No two women are the same—which is why Natrelle® Gel offers multiple sizes and projections, and all are designed for a soft feel. So you can find the fullness that’s perfect for you and your body. Although these implants are more expensive, for a large percentage of my patients they can provide a better cosmetic result and long-term durability. I am pleased to offer Natrelle® as part of my ongoing pursuit of excellent results for my patients. Please go to www.natrelle.com to learn more.
Breast Augmentation Newport Beach CA
Breast augmentation in Newport Beach, CA is a procedure that enlarges the size of your breasts and is one of the most popular procedures in the United States. This is done with the use of silicone or saline implants typically placed below the muscle of your chest wall. Placing an implant under your breast tissue will enlarge your current breast, however, an implant itself will do very little to change the shape of your breast or nipple-areola position. Using current techniques and technologies, my patients can expect to return to normal social activities and be out to dinner or shopping the same night as their breast augmentation.
Your primary (first) breast augmentation requires many important decisions that will affect your breast for the rest of your life. My goal is optimal breast shape and size while also balancing what your tissues will let me do. Maximum implant coverage with breast tissue is paramount, as well as an in-depth discussion about how implants will affect your overlying breast tissue. Depending on your breast envelope and tissue quality, your breast can accommodate certain size and shapes of implants. Pushing the boundaries of what is appropriate can “breast handicap” you for life. Because implants need to be changed on average every 10 years, a women in her 20s or 30s can expect to have possibly a half a dozen surgeries during her life on her breasts. This is why your initial augmentation is extremely important to understand exactly what you are asking for and what your surgeon is delivering.
Incision location can be inframammary (below the breast), peri-areolar (around the areola) or axillary (in the armpit). I simply do not use the belly button approach because it has the least control of the breast pocket and the least reliable result. Each incision has its advantages and disadvantages that we can go over during your consultation. Overall, pocket control is the most important part of your augmentation. I want to make sure that the incision allows meticulous dissection and optimal sterility. This is what will allow you to return to normal social activities the same day as your surgery.
For the large majority of women, I place the implant under the muscle in a “dual-plane” fashion. This allows optimal coverage of the implant and protects your overlying breast tissue. Implant size is also a very important consideration, and I will take several measurements of your chest and skin quality so that we can decide what size is appropriate to meet our goals. These measurements along with your wishes and implant sizers worn during your consultation can give the most accurate picture of what we need to achieve.
The final important decision is whether saline or silicone implants should be used. Breast implants are the most studied medical device in the history of the world and have not been shown to increase the risks of anything including cancer, autoimmune diseases, etc. In the office, I will provide examples of both implants as well as shaped versus round implants. I have experience with both as well as form stable implants and we can make a decision about what is right for you.
Newport Beach breast augmentation is an outpatient procedure done under general anesthesia. Using the most up to date techniques and technologies, the majority of my patients return home and I actually ask that they go out to dinner or shopping the same evening. Most patients can control their pain with over the counter medication.
Breast Revision/Implant Exchange
Secondary breast procedures are just as common in my practice as primary breast augmentation and/or mastopexy. Women present with a number of complaints including:
- implant malposition – too low or loss of cleavage
- deflation
- asymmetry
- capsular contracture
- implant maintenance as we recommend to have them replaced about every ten years
Depending on the complaint, I use a number of techniques to address my patients’ issues. It is very important to prioritize the issues and then come up with a comprehensive plan to address them. Communication is paramount and at times I meet with patients several times to make sure that we are on the same page.
There are a variety of techniques that I use both in breast reconstruction as well as aesthetic surgery to correct implant-related issues. One of the new modalities that I am very excited about is the use of Sientra™ implants, which have only been introduced into the United States for 1 year. These implants have been used safely in Brazil and Europe for decades and offer a large variety of shapes and gel types to correct implant issues and give optimal shape and projection to my patients.
