Scar Placement for Breast Augmentation in Newport Beach

August 23, 2022Christine Pigott

Just like any other surgery, augmenting breasts requires your surgeon to make an incision. Following the incision, your breast augmentation Newport Beach surgeon will form a pocket to insert the implant into your chest. Where your surgeon decides to make the incision is important because that’s where you’ll have a scar after the surgery is complete and your body has had time to heal. Here are the different areas where an incision can be made for breast implants.

Incision Locations

There are four incision locations that a breast augmentation plastic surgeon will choose from for your surgery. Your surgeon will talk to you about the best option based on your desired outcome and their medical expertise. The four incision locations are:

  • Periareolar
  • Inframammary
  • Transaxillary
  • Transumbilical

Periareolar Incision

Your breast augmentation plastic surgeon may recommend the periareolar incision, which is along the areola. This type of incision lets your surgeon position the implant above or below your breast’s muscle.

The upside to this incision is that the scar is usually easy to hide. It can also make placing the implant simple and more precise. The downside to the periareolar incision is that it could cause problems during breastfeeding or impact nipple sensation.

Inframammary Incision

The inframammary incision is the most common one made. For this incision, your breast augmentation plastic surgeon will cut into the inframammary fold. This is the parallel crease that connects the breast to your body.

Breast implant plastic surgeons often select this site because it gives them easy access to the area that they’re modifying. The downside to this location is that the scar may be slightly more visible.

Transaxillary Incision

If your breast implant plastic surgeon recommends the transaxillary incision, then they’ll be making the incision in your armpit. In this location, the incision will likely be well hidden.

The downside to this spot is that wound infections are more likely because the armpit is a moist area that may become a bacteria breeding ground. The armpit is also a place where you’ll probably end up rubbing the wound.

Transumbilical Incision

A transumbilical incision is the least common one made by breast implant plastic surgeons. Your surgeon will make this one in your belly button, which means that the scar would be concealed.

If this is the spot that you and your surgeon select for your breast augmentation procedure, then your doctor will need to tunnel to reach the breast area, making it harder to place the implants properly. There are risks to this incision, so many breast implant plastic surgeons won’t offer it.
