What to Expect from Breast Augmentation Recovery: A Realistic Approach

May 16, 2022Christine Pigott

What to Expect for Breast Augmentation Recovery?

Breast augmentation is an excellent way to invest in yourself and your appearance. Like any big investment, it takes proper planning to ensure you get the best results. Only your breast implant plastic surgeon can provide specific time frames, but you can expect to devote four to six weeks to basic recovery. When it comes to exercise and other vigorous activities, you may need to wait even longer.

Returning to Basic Activities

During week one, you’ll be resting and doing light movement to promote circulation and healing. This can be as simple as standing up and taking a slow walk around the house.

As you continue through the first three weeks, you may be able to add other light activities, such as stretching or basic tasks. However, you mustn’t do anything that requires even moderate lifting. It could displace your implants, cause a hematoma, or lead to other serious complications.

Going Back to Work

How soon you can return to work depends on what you do. If you sit at a desk, it’s possible to return as soon as you feel capable of getting through the day without pain medication. If your job involves physical activity, you’ll need more time off. You’ll want to avoid lifting or straining for at least six weeks following surgery. If possible, use vacation days to schedule as much time off work as you can.

Hitting the Gym

If you love exercise, you might find that taking a break from the gym is the most difficult aspect of recovery. As the weeks continue to pass, you’ll feel better, but the healing process won’t be complete. Although it can be frustrating, expect to take at least eight weeks away from the gym. Continue to avoid exercises that stress the pectoral muscles for up to 24 weeks. Your breast augmentation plastic surgeon can offer specific advice.
